The Demise of the Betta Sorority Tank

When the end came, it came as a complete surprise.

There were only four bettas in the betta sorority tank at feeding time.  There should have been five.

The Queen, Guinevere, was gone.

Quarantine was over.

I put my healthy female betta fish together in the betta sorority tank on Friday evening, so I could keep an eye on them over the weekend.  I had saved the various plastic cups and bowls that they came in. They floated in the 10 gallon tank, little fish-filled cups clanking together as the water temperature acclimated to the temperature in the tank.

My local pet store receives shipments on Wednesday evenings.  Wednesday after work, I went straight to the store.  The delivery truck was just pulling out.  We went through the betta fish together, the store owner and I, separating out the females.  There were five of them.  These were big girls, much more mature than my petite little Bella.  I chose three, leaving behind an identical twin and a wild-type brownish one.

A couple of years ago, I wandered into my local pet store, window shopping for fish to fill my new, used fish tank.  It was a large tank in my estimation, ten gallons with a black wrought iron stand.  I had picked it up at a thrift store for a song, cleaned it, filled it, and it was almost cycled and ready for fish.
